Visit Report - David Reeves

Here's a report from David on their visit to St John's

As part of our summer African adventure we took time out to visit the Shonda school project on a very hot day in July. Although we had informed Joseph the day we would be visiting, our arrival at 7.30 in the morning appeared to take everyone especially Head and Deputy Head by surprise. We did however receive a very warm welcome, teachers and governors were quickly informed and the children were rallied to give us a welcoming concert. Having heard so much about the school over the years it really was good to be seeing it for ourselves. Apart from the obvious poverty (which I think was worse than I had anticipated) the most striking thing was the happiness of the school children. I made a point of asking as many of the children as possible about their teachers; what they thought of them, how they were treated by them, were there any teachers they didn’t like etc. The replies were all very encouraging it appeared all the teachers were good and well liked and the children seemed to be treated well. What a good project, kids are being educated and almost certainly have a better future because of St John’s. Love it, keep up the good work and let’s do more!

Visit Report - Wendy and Jojo Fry

Here's a brief report from Wendy on their visit ...

Jojo (17) and Wendy (Mum) Fry holidayed in Mombasa in July 2013, and visited the Shonda project. Jojo stayed with Joseph, the administrator for 3 night as part of the residential for Gold D of E and thoroughly enjoyed his hospitality. Wendy visited on the first and last days of Jojo’s 4 day visit.

It was a joy to see the happy children gain an education in a very challenging environment. The school is in an ever expanding urban sprawl a few miles from the Likoni ferry linking Mombasa Island to the south. We saw many new houses being built as we went for a walk to see how close the sea was (about a mile or so), which meant walking around the vast holes where they had been mining for local stone to build the houses.

Children putting the skipping ropes sent by Pinewood School to good use

A rather formal picture of Class One!

Pinewood end of year report ...

In this second year of the Pinewood link with St John’s First the Baptist School, the excitement of the first year was built upon throughout the year, with much fundraising in the form of House Charity Days, where the children run stalls and games, collections after school productions and, for the first time, the involvement of the youngest Pinewood children, aged 3-7, in the Pre-Prep.

The Pre-Prep dedicated whole days to studying some aspects of the lives of the children in Shonda: their diet; how they get to school; subjects the children study and wider topics such as climate, dancing and music. The young Pinewood children made a collection of their own, and bought educational materials, board games, skipping ropes and balls for the Early Years children in Shonda. They also made a beautiful wall hanging with all the handprints from the Pinewood children, and all of this was boxed up and sent to Shonda. To everyone’s relief this arrived safely and was hugely appreciated by the staff and children in Shonda.

St John's attends National Music Festival

Pupils from St John's attended the National Music Festival held in Nakuru during the summer. This was made possible through the generosity of the pupils from Pinewood School. St John's pupils managed position forth out of 17 in one of the categories 5th position out of 25 schools in another. Although St John's has attended the Music Festival before this year's performance surpassed previous years. After the event the pupils had opportunity to visit one of the National park and got close with some of the wild life! So big thanks to Pinewood and many congratulations to the pupils of St John's.Here are some photos from the Festival ...

School uniforms made in Kenya

Since the start of the Project people have taken school uniforms out from UK to Shonda and this has worked really well and is much appreciated by the pupils. More than once we have heard stories of children refusing to change out of their new uniform at the end of the day! The downside with this arrangement is it is dependent upon people visiting from UK.
The School has teamed up with a local company who will measure a child and then make the uniform. A uniform can be made for £9.00. If you are interested in donating a uniform please send an email to [email protected] or by calling Simon or Sheila Mills on 01672 861632
