Making it happen ... fund raising

The Shonda Project is only able to support the people of Shonda because of the generosity of individuals and groups across the country.
We, and the people of Shonda are really grateful to everyone's support. Here are just a selection of recent fund raising efforts.

Neighbourhood recycling service ... raising hundreds of pounds

Sarah Pocock, a Year 12 student at St John's School, Marlbororough, offers to collect her neighbours recycling and take it to the recycling centre in return for a small donation to the Shonda Project. For the past three or 4 years, every month or so Sarah hands over a bag of coins, usually between £60 and £80, or to put it another way enough to pay most of a teachers salary for a month! Good one Sarah.

The Committee is ably supported by it's Secretary Brian Cruickshank. And the rest of the Committe Members include Carolyn and Rob Gittins, Derek and Jill Moss and Simon and Sheila Mills.

The project has lots of supporters across the county predominantly in the Redhill and Marlborough areas, without whom the Project would not function.

Life in Shonda ...

Shonda is a small community situated on the outskirts of Mombasa. Shonda is at the end of a dirt track a mile from the main tarmac road.
There is no piped water in the community and there is only basic sanitation. On a positive note electricity is now coming into the village which should improve the lives of the local people. Apart from the school there are a collection of small shops and market stalls and a rather grandly named "Internet Cafe" - although there is no Internet.

The Local Fruit Stall

Like many places in Africa illness and disease is a stark reality. AIDS, TB and malaria are ever present in the community and most people have either experienced illness or have lost a family member to disease.
It was identified early in the Project that the provision of simple medicines like paracetamol and aspirin made a huge difference to people's health and significantly reduced the length of time children were absent from school because of malarial fever and illness.

Gift Cards

Do something for a child in Shonda and buy a Shonda gift card.
It’s an alternative approach to gift-giving…

Help Children Like Michael...

You can help children like Michael. It works like this ...

  1. You buy a gift card
  2. The Shonda Project uses your money to buy a desk, medicines etc for use in Shonda, Kenya.
  3. For people who have nothing your gift will make a real difference.
